We'll find out together as a very different breed of Star Trek collectibles arrives in time for the post-Thanksgiving gift buying frenzy.

J.J. Abrams made Trek sexy again -- especially the original TV show from the 1960s. So Paramount and CBS put their marketing and licensing people to work. What did they come up with from just inside the Windsor Gate on Melrose?

The Vermont Teddy Bear Company is offering shorter, furrier versions of Captain James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock (right) for about $100 each. I've acquired one of these, and they're well made with a lot of attention to detail in their little uniforms.

Also, make sure you check out the Airwalk Terrain Hi Skate Star Trek StarFleet Edition sneakers from Payless. For $50, you get a really well-made urban sneaker that just happens to bear a Starfleet insignia. And they come in the departmental uniform colors of the original Enterprise crew -- gold, blue and red.
Continue reading Star Trek collectibles multiply in time for Black Friday

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Roddenberry on list of TV Hall of Fame inductees

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, Other Comedy Shows, Industry, Music and Variety, Game Show, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Awards, Reality-Free, Star Trek: Original Series
This might sound more overdue than According to Jim's cancellation, but one of TV's greatest creators is getting the Hall of Fame treatment.

Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry will join the ranks of the Television Academy's Hall of Fame next year at a special induction ceremony at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Other inductees include Candice Bergen, production and art director Charles Lisanby, announcer Don Pardo, Tom and Dick Smothers and game show producer Bob Stewart. He filed a lawsuit against CBS Paramount accusing the company of not paying him for all the ancillary income the company earned from the episode of Star Trek he wrote in 1967, "City on the Edge of Forever." Yesterday, Ellison announced on his web site that he had settled with CBS Paramount and he was very, very pleased. He didn't reveal how much money he made, but he probably did quite well.

After all, CBS Paramount has done very, very well with that original Star Trek episode. It's regarded as -- and is -- the all-time best show in the entire original ST canon. Ironically, Ellison never liked what Roddenberry and company had done with his script.
Continue reading Harlan Ellison bests CBS Paramount over 42 year-old Star Trek episode

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Get down to the bumping bass of 'SuvwI'pu' qan tu'lu'be'

Filed under: Video, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Reality-Free, Star Trek: Original Series
If you thought the phlegm filled syllables of the Klingon language couldn't make ordinary human music sound as sweet as the innocent cheeps of a nest of newborn birds, then you'd be right.

Klenginem, a member of the Klingon tribe (I don't know what the politically correct term for Klingon is these days, Romulan-Americans?), has turned Eminem's self-serving ditty "Without Me" into a self-serving Klingon ditty.
Don't try and sing along if you aren't fluent in the words of the warrior, or it will turn your esophagus inside out.
No, seriously.

It makes me wonder exactly what was in the Happy Meals that made the Klingons like it so much. Wasn't it established during Star Trek: The Next Generation that Klingons like to eat live worms? Perhaps that was in place of the french fries. I recall eating a Happy Meal or two back in the day and don't recall eating anything that would be palatable to a Klingon.

I'm sure there has been much sillier Star Trek merchandise being pushed since then given the ubiquity of the franchise, but this commercial did make me laugh a little. The Second Amendment stands as one of many great testaments to the idea of freedom that our forefathers envisioned for their people. They felt a government should trust their people with great responsibility if they truly believed in the concept of freedom and democracy.

Sure, if they came to the present and saw that we primarily use that responsibility for hunting moose from helicopters and negotiating with the Domino's guy they might take it right back, but the idea is what's important.

So to celebrate one of America's latest of many birthday to come because fireworks are technically illegal in my neck of the woods, here are your TV's seven greatest guns.
Continue reading Seven greatest hand cannons in TV history

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Leonard Nimoy once made a music video

Filed under: TV Royalty, OpEd, Video, Celebrities, Reality-Free, Star Trek: Original Series
I was aware that, like fellow Star Trek icon William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy released an album or two in his day. I wasn't aware, however, that Nimoy made a music video that accompanied one of the songs on those albums.

The song is "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins" and was released in 1968 (which was during his run on Star Trek) on an album called The Two Sides of Leonard Nimoy. I'm surprised this video did not get more air time on MTV back in the day. Perhaps it should be considered for VH1. Whether hustling beauty drugs or androids, Mudd was always looking for a quick space buck and was a humorous thorn in Captain Kirk's side.

While some sites suggested Mudd's would-be return in Abrams' next movie could prove a great opportunity for Jack Black to come aboard the Enterprise, Abrams denied the Black casting move.
Continue reading Jack Black not trekking to play TV's Harry Mudd

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Star Trek merchandising gone wild

Filed under: OpEd, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Reality-Free, Star Trek: Original Series
Okay, I understand the mock phasers and the shirts and the action figures. But when someone releases a Star Trek casket and/or urn for when you die, I have to scratch my head a little.

Admittedly, I've heard of Star Trek weddings and even known people who have attended them. I guess since Star Trek fans are getting up there in age, caskets and urns are the next step. Hell, they probably still run Star Trek-themed weddings at Star Trek: The Experience in Las Vegas.

The truth is that most of the original cast is getting up there in age. I cannot help but wonder if someone is going to buy one of them a casket or urn from Eternal Image.

Besides all that, the real Star Trek fans would want a Klingon funeral. That's where they scream on top of the recently deceased body then let anybody else dispose of it however they wish.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

GoAnimate brings Star Trek characters to fan animations

Filed under: Animation, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Reality-Free, Star Trek: Original Series
With J.J. Abrams' Star Trek topping the box office charts, fans can now shape their Trekker energies into fresh, free cartoons with new characters added to the GoAnimate.com line-up.

The do-it-yourself cartoon site wrapped a licensing agreement with Paramount and CBS early in 2009, allowing fans to use stylized versions of classic Trek characters, sets and props in original short animations. Setting up an account is free - unless you count the time you're going to burn making your cartoon.

In addition to Kirk, Spock and other familar faces, the site just upped the supporting player factor with usable avatars of the Gorn, alien female Mara, Klingons and Nurse Chapel.
Continue reading GoAnimate brings Star Trek characters to fan animations

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Should Shatner be in the next Star Trek movie?

Filed under: TV on the Bigscreen, TV Squad Polls, Celebrities, Reality-Free, Star Trek: Original Series
So William Shatner says he hasn't seen the new Star Trek movie yet. But he says that he knows it has gotten some great reviews and he's really looking forward to seeing it. Is having Shatner in the next movie a great way to please old Trek fans or do you think having yet another character from the original series would be pushing it, considering they already had Leonard Nimoy in the first one (which is pretty much how I'm leaning)?

View Poll

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Star Trek is Star Wars (not really, but this is funny)

Filed under: TV on the Bigscreen, Reality-Free, Star Trek: Original Series
First let me say that I loved the new big screen Star Trek movie. But I have to admit that this video below from CollegeHumor is rather accurate. Maybe it's just because of the genre and the characters and not lazy storytelling.

It's a pretty impressive list and does prove that despite the blatant contradiction of the show's history as a result of time travel, they were actually pretty good with getting the details of the characters correct.

Spoilers follow this paragraph. On the original Star Trek episode that aired on November 17, 1967, "Journey to Babel," introduced Ambassador Sarek of Vulcan and his lovely human wife Amanda, when they boarded the Enterprise on a diplomatic mission. It was a shock to Captain Kirk to discover that the elegant older couple were not merely envoys, they were in fact, Spock's parents.
Continue reading Star Trek's Journey to Babel: Standout Episode for Mother's Day

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Top ten lines never before said in a Star Trek film

Filed under: Late Night, Video, Celebrities, Talk Show, Reality-Free, Star Trek: Original Series
This is becoming Leonard Nimoy Squad after yesterday's post from The Today Show, but here's another one, in honor of the new Star Trek film opening today.
