For instance, Big Love is coming back to HBO on January 10.

But that's not all. Leverage announced a return date this week, and there's also Burn Notice and The Closer, NBC has Chuck. And Breaking Bad is returning to AMC in March.

How great is all that TV - and I haven't even mentioned Lost or 24! Advice to all television fans; if you don't already have the best equipment in your TV room, if you're hankering for HD or have been worried about your DVR, upgrade your stuff now - ask Santa Claus for what you want - and get ready for the new year bounty.
Continue reading Getting set for Big Love's return with a new promo video

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Doctor Who star to play John Lennon

Filed under: OpEd, Doctor Who, Celebrities, Casting, Reality-Free
Former Doctor Who lead Christopher Eccleston will be playing John Lennon in an upcoming British television drama commissioned by BBC Four about the life of John Lennon between 1967 and 1971. To further the Doctor Who connection, former Torchwood star Naoko Mori (who played Tosh on the show) will be playing Yoko Ono.

There is a lot of crossover between Doctor Who fans and Beatles fans, so there is sure to be some interest in the series. The roles I know Eccleston best for are those of the Doctor and Destro from G.I.Joe: The Rise of Cobra, so the question is if he can pull off a Liverpudlian accent. Since in the aforementioned roles he's done a Northern British accent (I believe his natural one) and a Scottish accent, he's likely capable of it.

So what do you think? Is Eccleston a good choice for the role of John Lennon?

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Survivor Samoa - The First 27 Days

Filed under: OpEd, Survivor, Episode Reviews

(S19E11) Oh my. Evil Russell from Survivor looks like some sort of deranged Buddha gone bad in this screen capture from tonight's episode. Tonight, like every Thanksgiving episode, was the clips show boasting previously unseen footage. It's not surprising that they do this each year. With the format of the show, they can't run a real repeat. And, if they were to air a new episode on the holiday, many folks would end up missing it. I'm usually disappointed with the footage shown, but tonight we did have a few surprises and interesting bits -- nothing earth-shattering, mind you.
Continue reading Review: Survivor Samoa - The First 27 Days

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Nip/Tuck - Alexis Stone II

Filed under: OpEd, Nip/Tuck, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S06E07) "That's why we need to play dirty." - Sean

Gotta give credit where credit is due -- despite the fact that Teddy's story was so poorly wrapped up, Ryan Murphy and Co. crafted a helluva one-two punch to make us forget about it. It wasn't about abundance and excess, because as a middle-class situation comedy, the current economic state doesn't reflect having plenty and living beyond your means. Frankie and Mike are doing their best to get by. But they're not bitching about it. That's part of the reason why I'm enjoying this show so much. Like me, Jason also liked this episode quite a bit.

Frankie had to work on Thanksgiving, that's true, and she did protest about that, but not the fact that the family has to plot out their Black Friday shopping at the mall to get every bargain imaginable. They don't complain about being strapped. They accept that they have to cut coupons and be thrifty.

Like the remnant carpet for the bedroom as an anniversary gift, The Hecks are accepting of their middle class.
Continue reading The Middle Thanksgiving was an instant classic

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

What Kona is thankful for

Filed under: OpEd, Video, The Office, 30 Rock, Dexter, TV Squad Lists, Reality-Free, Parks and Recreation, Glee, Community

It's Thanksgiving morning as I'm writing this. I've got five pounds of potatoes boiling for our mashed potatoes, the turkey is in the oven, and the butternut squash is cut up for the risotto I'm making. My baby is playing ball with his dad, and the dog is on the couch trying to sleep and just remaining thankful that said baby isn't trying to pet her eyeball right now. I have a lot of things to be thankful for, but as others have said before, me, this is a TV blog, so let's talk about television-related things I'm thankful for.

As we're getting close to the mid-season point, I feel more and more that this is an exceptionally strong season of television-- even with the whole Leno debacle. There are several new shows that I'm quickly falling in love with, and some returning shows that are better than ever. In no particular order, here are things that I am thankful for.
Continue reading What Kona is thankful for

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

What Jason is thankful for

Filed under: OpEd, Reality-Free, Gone Too Soon
I'm not particularly thankful that I'm going to be having my very own battle of the bulge this upcoming week, but I am looking forward to good eats and seeing the family. The older I get, the faster these years wiz by, so it's important that we slow down and take the time to be appreciative of what we have, even if we might always want a little more.

This year, we made the jump from a 1997 model 27" Philips Magnavox television to a massive 52" HDTV. We also picked up a PS3, partially for the Blu-Ray player. So I'm thankful to finally be caught up with the rest of the world in television technology. Who knew it could all be so pretty?

More specifically, I think we're in a great era of television, even as viewer numbers continue to erode. There are just so many good shows on television, and thanks to DVRs and online streaming of those shows, we even have better opportunities to watch them. But what specifically am I thankful for this year?
Continue reading What Jason is thankful for

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: The New Adventures of Old Christine - I Love Woo, I Hate Woo

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free
(S05E09) I'm so glad Hank sucked, because it allowed me to establish a new two-hour block of comedy on Wednesday nights. Just substitute Christine for Hank, and then flip over to The Middle and ABC for the rest of the night. What a satisfying night of laughs.

There was no Thanksgiving trimmings for Christine this year; instead it was date night. And while the episode did fall victim to some predictable set-ups, it was still a lot of fun to watch. I particularly liked the twists and turns of Barb's date with Dave. She dragged Christine along to make sure Dave didn't propose to her.

Meanwhile, now that New Christine is pregnant, Richard is ready to woo her as well. But he needn't worry about cleaning up or even trying. Just get her into bed: that's where he really shines.
Continue reading Review: The New Adventures of Old Christine - I Love Woo, I Hate Woo

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: The Middle - Thanksgiving

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free
(S01E09) While I'm not ready to declare that The Middle is a superior sitcom to Modern Family, if this episode is any indication, I'm ready to say that it's every bit as good. And funny! Man, was this a brilliant holiday episode. I don't know how Thanksgivings go at your house, but ours have gone very much like this one at times. With everyone busy, and family members having to work because they have terrible bosses.

I swear, it's like these writers haven't set this in Indiana, but rather in my own Midwestern backyard. And while things were traditionally set up, as we'd expect, for the traditional "sweet comedy" outcomes, The Middle turned some of those conventions on their head.

They also showed us a new way to cook a turkey, though I'm not really sure if it would work all that well. And there's nothing wrong with Axl loving the can-shaped cranberry sauce. That's my favorite, too! Just slice it up and you're good to go.
Continue reading Review: The Middle - Thanksgiving

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Modern Family - Fizbo

Filed under: OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free, Modern Family

(S01E09) You've gotta love the use of the dramatic flashback to lead us into the saga of Luke's birthday party. Not only was the affectation utilized well, it again showcased the love and support at the heart of this family saga. Opening us at the hospital the way they did also nicely gave the whole episode that feeling of inevitable dread.

At the same time, they smartly kept the number of people involved in the hospital conversations very small at first so that we would have no choice but to speculate which member of the cast would wind up there, and via what means.

Then, they just sat back and let events unfold as Phil and Claire put together one of the coolest -- and lamest -- parties in the history of television. And still they found a way to let everyone shine for at least a scene or two.
Continue reading Review: Modern Family - Fizbo

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

What Hemal is thankful for

Yes, I'm thankful for my family and my friends and my health and my job that is slowly but surely driving me into an early grave..blah, blah, blah. That's all the big stuff that we should be thankful for everyday. Now, let's talk about the little things that don't get mentioned around the table but should.

Fan Girls
I am probably the biggest lurker in the world. I never post on fan forums and I don't have a LiveJournal, but I troll fan sites for the latest dirt on celebs and shows I follow. It's that time of year when we reflect on all the good things in our lives, and of course, my thoughts turn to TV. Let's take a look at a few things on the tube that make me feel all warm and fuzzy.

Sexy vampires. Oh my, we got lots of them this year. The Twilight Saga: New Moon's got nothin' on TV vampires. Eric Northman and Bill Compton from True Blood are definitely at the top of my list. Pictured is that hunk o' steamy vamp himself, Eric, a.k.a. Alexander Skarsgard in real life. But we also got those lovely Salvatore brothers on The Vampire Diaries. Elena certainly has some high-class problems, doesn't she? Steadfast Stefan or bad-vamp Damon? They both have their particular gifts.
Continue reading What Jane is thankful for

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Eastwick - Paint and Pleasure

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free
(S01E08) "I am through with tortured relationships and unrequited crushes." - Joanna

Even though Eastwick has gotten the big ol' axe, I'll cover it til the bitter end, gosh darnit. I believe it has one more episode, which airs next week.

At this point, it seems kind of silly to invest more emotional energy into the show, but even though it's had some trouble finding its footing, Eastwick has gotten consistently more interesting. In particular, I was looking forward to seeing where the romance and lust between Darryl and Roxie would go. It got a little more heated this week, and there's plenty of sparks there.

The crush Joanna had on Will seems to have all but vanished, and she seems cool with Kat going out with him. Kat, on the other hand, isn't quite sure what she's doing. When she saw Ray making out with another woman, her furor stirred things up and sent a piano, among other things, flying.
Continue reading Review: Eastwick - Paint and Pleasure

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: So You Think You Can Dance - 2 of 12 Voted Off

Filed under: OpEd, Episode Reviews, So You Think You Can Dance
(S06E18) I'm surprised how well So You Think You Can Dance can cover up the fact that the first 30 minutes can be wasted in just finding out who the bottom three were. It felt like the two-couples-at-a-time technique worked better than having three couples up at one time. One thing I'm happy to see in the recaps are the slo-mo camera angles. Other angles only show up on Dancing with the Stars when someone trips or falls.

Sure, the show could be completed in 30 minutes, but at least they filled the time with a strong group performance, ballet, and Shakira.
Continue reading Review: So You Think You Can Dance - 2 of 12 Voted Off

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Glee - Hairography

Filed under: OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free, Glee

(S01E11) Distractions abounded in this latest episode of Glee. Most of the characters were causing distraction or being distracted from the situation at hand, and we were back to most of the soapy aspects of the show. Teri and Quinn were both thinking about the baby, and Will and Finn remained as in the dark as ever. More on that and other complications after the jump.
Continue reading Review: Glee - Hairography

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

NBC chooses Brett Favre over Tom Brady

Filed under: Sports, Programming, OpEd, Celebrities, Ratings, Reality-Free
One of the perks NBC has over the other networks when it comes to its football coverage is what's called the flex schedule. Unlike CBS and Fox and ESPN which get the games that are scheduled months in advance without regard for ideal match ups, NBC has the option of plucking a better game for the Sunday Football Night in America broadcast. Hence the term, flex, as in flexible.

Thus far this season, NBC has had three chances to flip the switch and passed. However, on December 6, NBC has chosen a Vikings/Cardinals game over a Pats/Dolphins match.
Continue reading NBC chooses Brett Favre over Tom Brady

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

What Jackie is thankful for

Filed under: OpEd, Pickups and Renewals, Reality-Free
Yes, it's that time of year once again. It's Thanksgiving -- yay, food! With the times such as they are, I'll admit to being more thankful on a regular basis during this year than many years gone by. I have a job (a few jobs actually), a roof over my head, money for food and bills, good friends, family, a bionic knee so I can be a bit like The Six Million Dollar Man, and so much more.

But, since this is about television, I'm going to focus on what I'm thankful for in television and TV-related kind of things. We might share some items on the list, we might not. While the times might not be great for financial dealings, it's a wondrous time for television geeks like you and me. Or, maybe it's just me. So, exactly what am I thankful for? Read on.
Continue reading What Jackie is thankful for

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

What Joel is thankful for

Filed under: OpEd, How I Met Your Mother, Reality-Free, Mad Men, Community, Cougar Town, Modern Family
You know, it's funny. When I started here I was a lowly IT guy with no girlfriend and lots of time on his hands to watch TV, even on Thanksgiving. Now I'm engaged, the editor of this site, and have to run around to so many family and friend-related events this weekend my head's already spinning just thinking about it. So I have a lot to be thankful for (and I just realized how friggin' long I've been here... wow).

But TV has always been a part of that equation, and it had no less of a role for me this year. So, in the TV world, here is what will make me thankful as I dive into the turkey tomorrow:

ABC's Wednesday comedy line-up: Against all trends, ABC rolled the dice and started a whole new night of comedy on Wednesdays. And while Hank flamed out, The Middle, Modern Family, and Cougar Town look like they have staying power, both from a quality and a ratings standpoint.
Continue reading What Joel is thankful for

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Surprise! A couple of weeks ago, I alerted you folks to the premiere of MTV's Jersey Shore, an eye-rolling show that promotes itself as a collection of the shore's "hottest, tannest, craziest Guidos." It's enough to make a Jersey guy like me nauseous.

In a shocking development, it seems like a national Italian-American group has a bit of an issue with this show. UNICO has asked MTV to pull Jersey Shore even before it airs, calling it "trash television" that unfairly depicts Italian-Americans.

Ya think? Wonder if it was the fist-pumping that set them off? Or the drunkenness? Or the fourth-grade-level sentence structure the participants use? Or, maybe -- just maybe -- it was MTV's use of the term "Guido" in the friggin' promo that got them upset. Not sure if I can put my finger on it.
Continue reading Surprise! It's true, television has gone through its ups and downs in the past year. A bit of residual anger still bubbles within me when I think of Jay Leno shuffling not-so-subtly around Conan O'Brien or the fact that I'll never be as daring or funny as the writers behind Peep Show, but Thanksgiving is not meant for dwelling on silly things like that (it's what the rest of the year's for). Let's review my list of a few (TV-related) things that I'm thankful for, and then I promise I'll let everyone leave and stuff their faces.

Community: I've liked this show since the pilot and I'm thrilled to see it taking off. In the beginning, I enjoyed its snappy dialogue and overall attitude, but feared that it wouldn't find a direction until NBC got impatient and chopped it from the schedule.
Continue reading What Annie is thankful for

Permalink | Email this | | Comments
